INTRODUCTION

While preparing the Catalogue of Tachinidae of Brazil (Nihei et al., 2015NIHEI, S.S.; DIOS, R.V.P. & SANTIS, M.D. 2015. Tachinidae. In: Catálogo Taxonômico da Fauna do Brasil. PNUD. Available on: http://fauna.jbrj.gov.br/fauna/faunadobrasil/1115. (20/Oct/2015).

), we found several junior homonyms within the Neotropical tachinids, mainly from Brazil. In order to promote nomenclatural stability, and eliminating thus ambiguous names, we are proposing new replacement names for 13 species in the present contribution, and two synonymies are reinstated, namely: Archytas analis (Macquart, 1843MACQUART, J. 1843. [Also printed separately as his “Dipteres exotiques noveaux ou peu connus”. v. 2, pt. 3, 5-304 Paris, Roret, 1843].) = Archytas analis (Fabricius, 1905FABRICIUS, J.C. 1805. Systema antliatorum secundum ordines, genera, species adiectis synonymis, locis, observationibus, descriptionibus. Brunsvigae. 373p.); and Jurinella obesa (Wiedemann, 1830WIEDEMANN, C.R.W. 1830. Aussereuropäische zweiflügelige Insekten. Schulz, Hamm, Zweiter Theil, xii + 684pp.) = Jurinella ambigua (Macquart, 1851MACQUART, J. 1851. [Also published as “Dipteres exotiques noveaux ou peu connus”. Supplément IV [part], pp. 161-336. Paris, Roret, 1851].).

Tachinidae (Diptera): nomenclatural review and changes, primarily for America north of Mexico. The Canadian Entomologist, 130(06):751-774.) synonymized Paraphorantha Townsend, 1915 with Phasia, but left the homonymy between Phasia brasiliana (Townsend, 1937TOWNSEND, C.H.T. 1937. New fly parasites of Dysdercus. Revista de Entomologia, 7:316-318.) and Phasia brasiliana (Townsend, 1929TOWNSEND, C.H.T. 1929. New species of humid tropical American Muscoidea (Sic). Synonymies

TACHININI

1. Archytas analis (Macquart, 1843MACQUART, J. 1843. [Also printed separately as his “Dipteres exotiques noveaux ou peu connus”. v. 2, pt. 3, 5-304 Paris, Roret, 1843].:196) (1843MACQUART, J. 1843. [Also printed separately as his “Dipteres exotiques noveaux ou peu connus”. v. 2, pt. 3, 5-304 Paris, Roret, 1843].:39) (Jurinia). Type locality: “Brazil”. Junior synonym of Archytas analis (Fabricius, 1805FABRICIUS, J.C. 1805. Systema antliatorum secundum ordines, genera, species adiectis synonymis, locis, observationibus, descriptionibus. Brunsvigae. 373p.:311) (Tachina). Holotype (ZMUC). Type locality: “America meridionali” [probably British Guiana, Essequibo River]. Syn. nov.

Notes: (Guimarães, 1971GUIMARÃES, J.H. 1971. 104. Family Tachinidae (Larvaevoridae). In: PAPAVERO, N. (Ed.). A catalogue of the Diptera of Americas south of the United States. São Paulo, Depto. de Zoologia, Secretaria da Agricultura. 333p.:48) first recognized this homonymy and noted: “This species is a secondary homonym of the preceding one; as both are unrecognized I prefer not to rename it at present”. It is curious that he had defined A. analis (Fabricius) as unrecognized, whereas several other authors, previously and posteriorly, were able to identify this taxon, even proposing new junior synonymies under this nominal species (e.g.,Austen, 1907AUSTEN, E.E. 1907. The synonymy and generic position of certain species of Muscidae (sens. lat.) in the collection of the British Museum, described by the late Francis Walker. Annals and Magazine of Natural History, (7)19:327-347.; Ravlin & Stehr, 1984RAVLIN, F.W. & STEHR, F.W. 1984. Revision of the genus Archytas (Diptera: Tachinidae) for America north of Mexico. Miscelaneous Publications of the Entomological Society of America, 58:1-59.). The original description given by Fabricius is poor, but the examination of the female type, although a female, allows its unambiguous identification. Therefore, only analis Macquart can be regarded as unrecognized. In his revision of Archytas, (Guimarães, 1961GUIMARÃES, J.H. 1961. Terceira contribuição ao conhecimento do gênero Archytas Jaennicke, 1867 (Diptera, Tachinidae). Memórias do Instituto Oswaldo Cruz, 59:355-396.:374) listed analis Macquart as synonym of analis Fabricius, which we reinstate here.

2. Jurinella ambigua (Macquart, 1851MACQUART, J. 1851. [Also published as “Dipteres exotiques noveaux ou peu connus”. Supplément IV [part], pp. 161-336. Paris, Roret, 1851].:145) (Macquart, 1851MACQUART, J. 1851. [Also published as “Dipteres exotiques noveaux ou peu connus”. Supplément IV [part], pp. 161-336. Paris, Roret, 1851].:172) (Hystricia). Type locality: Mexico, Guerrero. Junior synonym of Jurinella obesa (Wiedemann, 1830WIEDEMANN, C.R.W. 1830. Aussereuropäische zweiflügelige Insekten. Schulz, Hamm, Zweiter Theil, xii + 684pp.:282) (Tachina). Syntypes male/female (NHMW, ZMUC). Type locality: “Brazil”. Syn. nov.

Notes: (Townsend, 1931TOWNSEND, C.H.T. 1931. Notes on American Oestromuscoid types. Revista de Entomologia, 1:65-104, 157-182.:159) had already proposed this synonymy, thereafter (Curran, 1947CURRAN, C.H. 1947. New and little known American Tachinidae. Bulletin of the American Museum of Natural History, 89:45-122.:66) put this synonymy as doubtful only because the color of abdomen is different. Then, (Guimarães, 1971GUIMARÃES, J.H. 1971. 104. Family Tachinidae (Larvaevoridae). In: PAPAVERO, N. (Ed.). A catalogue of the Diptera of Americas south of the United States. São Paulo, Depto. de Zoologia, Secretaria da Agricultura. 333p.) treated ambigua Macquart as valid name and obesa Wiedemann as unrecognized, even though the syntypes of the latter are available for study. Thus, we are now reinstating the synonymy between Jurinella obesa (Wiedemann, 1830) and Jurinella ambigua (Macquart, 1851MACQUART, J. 1851. [Also published as “Dipteres exotiques noveaux ou peu connus”. Supplément IV [part], pp. 161-336. Paris, Roret, 1851].).
