FRANCO, Marcello; LACAZ, Carlos da Silva, RESTREPO-MORENO, A. & DEL NEGRO, Goldo, Ed. - Paracoccidioidomycosis. Boca Raton, CRC Press, 1994. 410p., illust.

ISBN: 0-8493-4868-4.

On reviewing the Brazilian book-PARACOCCIDIOIDOMICOSE -edited by Del Negro, Lacaz and Fiorillo in 1982, in S. Paulo, Brazil, Dr. Donald L. Greer, from the Department of Dermatology of LSU Medical Center, New Orleans, USA, wrote the following: "The Symposium on Paracoccidioidomycosis, held in Medellín, Colombia in 1971, was the first attempt to bring all the outstanding Latin-American scientists together and compile the existing data on this fascinating disease. Ten years have passed, and Drs. Del Negro, da Silva Lacaz and Fiorillo have produced a second monograph which, without a doubt, is the most complete and current on this topic... covering both the basic and clinical aspects of paracoccidioidomycosis".

Ten more years have elapsed since such a publication; and in this period of time a numberless of new studies on the disease have been carried out; consequently the understanding of all aspects of paracoccidioidomycosis has increased substantially. Research developed in Latim American countries and all over the world brought up new and substantial knowledge in the fields of etiology, pathogenesis, therapeutics and, much more valuable, in the host-parasite relationships, the immunological diagnosis and, above all, in the field of molecular biology.

The former editors, together with other experts (Franco, Restrepo Moreno and Brummer) decided then to update the previous book, not only publishing the new conquests acquired but also publishing them in English, in order to make it more accessible and useful to all mycologists and researchers working in the field of Mycology.

Thanks to the cooperation of CRC Press, Inc. It was possible to turn it into reality.

The book provides an exhaustive review of all aspects of the disease, and the contributors, 45 in all, are highly competent and experienced workers. The layout is attractive, most of the figures are very good in quality and a number of references close each chapter. It is to regret the fact that two figures (pages 283 and 334) came out up-side down.

Up to this date (January 94) this is the only book entirely dedicated to the study of paracoccidioidomycosis written in English.

We believe that it is highly recommended for all mycologists and physicians who want a complete undersdtanding of this fungal disease.
