We are releasing the fifth issue of the 2014 volume of the IBRACON Structures and Materials Journal. This issue brings eight articles on relevant topics of concrete structures and materials, such as reliability, creep, progressive collapse and others, discussing the Brazilian codes with comparisons to the international codes. The first article discusses the Brazilian ABNT codes with respect to reliability indices for reinforced concrete, steel and steel-concrete composite beams. The influence of the steel reinforcement ratio in concrete columns on their properties of creep and shrinkage is the topic of the second articles, which is based on experimental tests and three-dimensional finite element-based simulations of experimental curves. The next article reports an investigation aiming at the influence of surface treatment of concrete specimens tested under compression. The fourth article presents an analysis of the mechanical behavior of a railway bridge during train braking using the Finite Element Method for numerical simulation and monitoring data acquired during actual operation, with a comparison with code provisions. Another article discusses the viability of the APULOT test applied to concrete with rubber addition to evaluate bonding steel-concrete. The sixth article draws on the computational assessment of the progressive collapse of reinforced concrete planar frames using a nonlinear multilayered beam formulation, including elastic-viscoplastic effects. The investigation focused on the potential resistance of frames to progressive collapse when a column is accidentally removed. The seventh article presents the second part of an experimental investigation on the use of steel-concrete bond tests for estimating axial compressive strength of concrete. This issue closes with an article on material and geometric nonlinear analysis of reinforced concrete frames. Experimental results reported in the literature are used to validate the proposed formulation and computational.

We are pleased to announce that SciELO has already assigned DOI (Digital Object Identifier) codes to all the former issues, which are now available in http://www.scielo.br/riem/. This is important because it increases the visibility of our Journal, favoring the access by the international community.

We appreciate the dedication of authors and reviewers, responsible for the good quality of the content of this issue.
