Novelties and perspectives

In 2023, as a reflection of a continuous workflow, Revista Bioética brings several novelties and perspectives for its growth and improvement. The first concerns the creation of its own committee in order to assist editors and speed up the initial processing of articles. The Revista Bioética Committee was established internally following the norms of the Federal Council of Medicine (CFM), with the following members:

  • Scientific editor advisor José Hiran da Silva Gallo M.D.: medical specialist in gynecology and obstetrics; Ph.D in bioethics and medical ethics with post-doctoral research in bioethics from the School of Medicine of University of Porto;

  • Editor-in-chief advisor Helena Maria Carneiro Leão M.D.: rheumatologist and occupational physician; Master in forensic science from State University of Pernambuco and a specialist in bioethics from the School of Medicine of University of Porto;

  • Advisor Tatiana Bragança de Azevedo Della Giustina M.D.: medical specialist in otorhinolaryngology; specialist in occupational medicine; master in human communication disorders from Federal University of Santa Maria; Ph.D in public health from the Universidad de Ciencias Empresariales y Sociales (Buenos Aires, Argentina);

  • Giselle Crosara Gracindo Ph.D: lawyer; Ph.D in bioethics from the School of Medicine of University of Porto;

  • José Humberto Belmino M.D.: specialist in gynecology and obstetrics; Ph.D in bioethics and medical ethics from the School of Medicine of University of Porto and post-doctoral research in communication and health from Universidade Aberta (Portugal);

  • Ph.D professor José Antonio Cordero da Silva: pulmonologist; specialist in public health and medical education from University of São Paulo; Ph.D in bioethics and medical ethics from the School of Medicine of University of Porto;

  • Maria do Carmo Wanssa M.D.: physician; Ph.D in bioethics from the School of Medicine of University of Porto;

  • José Odair Ferrari M.D.: oncologist; master in public health from University of São Paulo; Ph.D in bioethics from the School of Medicine of University of Porto.

The second novelty is related to the publication process of the articles because, at the beginning of this year, Revista Bioética became a continuous publication, following the Criteria, policy and procedures for admission and permanence of scientific journals in the SciELO Brazil Collection 11. , updated in September 2022. In this modality, as soon as an article is approved and edited, it is published. According to Vanz and Silveira, the editor does not control the number of articles published by authors from a given university, region or country, they will only know by the end of the year,when volume is finished 22. .

The third novelty refers to preprints, one of the new criteria of SciELO, which are now accepted by Revista Bioética. A preprint is a manuscript ready for submission to a journal (…) deposited on reliable preprint servers, before or in parallel with its submission to a journal 33. Scientific Electronic Library Online. Op. cit. p. 8.. These articles are made available in open access systems (repositories or servers), which accelerate the process of communication and dissemination of relevant studies. This modality saw great success during the COVID-19 pandemic given the speed and updating of information.

The fourth change planned for 2023 is the update of our Open Journal Systems (OJS), a free and open-source software employed in the management of peer-reviewed scientific journals, created by the Public Knowledge Project and released under the General Public License 44. . It is one of the most used pieces of software by scientific journals, including Revista Bioética. In conjunction with this update, we are preparing a new website; such reformulation aims to expand the insertion of the journal in international platforms, such as Web of Science, PubMed and others.

The topics addressed in Revista Bioética are committed to ethics, research, teaching and society, being based on good standards of national and international scientific publications, according to the editorial standards of the journal. We thus invite the members of CFM, of Regional Councils of Medicine, physicians and all of society to participate with scientific productions or as reviewers.

All papers submitted and evaluated follow the same criteria of the editorial flow and are subject to the scrutiny of the editorial board, as well as that of the other reviewers. The articles analyzed and selected for publication are only those that meet the criteria established in the journal’s editorial standards and follow its scope and objectives, thus preserving the journal’s high relevance. The editorial policy of Revista Bioética follows the recommendations on the Guidelines on Best Practices for Strengthening Ethics in Scientific Publication 55. Scientific Electronic Library Online. Guia de boas práticas para o fortalecimento da ética na publicação científica. SciELO [Internet]. 2018 [acesso 25 abr 2023]. Disponível: https://bit.ly/3IGOPIK

, using the appropriate tools to comply with formal aspects, so that authors are made to review and be responsible for the content of their manuscripts, including any conflicts of interest.

Contributions on the various topics addressed by the journal—such as the COVID-19 pandemic in the bioethical context; the bioethical issue and limitations on freedoms in times of COVID-19; bioethics, empathy, and Spinoza’s perspective; ethical considerations about the study of placebo-controlled vaccines in pregnant women; in addition to an article on the elaboration and validation of the Brazilian scale of perception on euthanasia—stimulate the reading and the growing collaboration of the authors. This is the main reason for the editorial changes aimed at quality, relevance and international recognition of Revista Bioética.
