SUMMARY

The anatomy of lhe ripe fruit (pericarp) of several varieties and species of Coffea has been object of study by many investigators. In spite of these studies, the anatomical structure of this fruit is not yet well known, there being some doubts about the presence and denomination of a tissue localizes between the mesocarp innermost cell layers and the endocarp.

Based on observations made on different species and varieties of Coffea and comparing them to those reported in the literature, the writer presents some explanations aimed at clarifying the existing doubts.
