SUMMARY
The level of infestation of the soft scale Saccharicoccus sacchari Cockerell (Hemoptera, Pseudococcidae) in 19 sugarcane varieties was observed under greenhouse con-ditions, in Campinas, State of São Paulo. The germ plasm observed included two Brazilian commercial varieties of Saccharum officinarum, two wild varieties of Saccharum spontaneum, 6 varieties of Saccharum officinarum of the series CP and 9 hybrids of S. officinarum x S. spontaneum. All the germ plasm, except the two commercial Brazilian varieties, was obtained from the U.S. Sugarcane Research Laboratory, Houma, Louisiania. There were significant differences in infestation among varieties but no differen-ces among species. The variety SES 351 of S. spontaneum was completely free of infestation whereas the variety US 76-20 a hybrid of S. officinarum x S. spontaneum had 92.2% of nodes infested. The other germ plasm was distributed in the interval of 0 to 92.2% of infestation, showing that all degrees of infestation may occur, depending on the variety. There was no relation between infestation and thickness of the colm.
