The Jornal de Pediatria aims to be a source of scientific knowledge for Brazilian and international pediatric researchers. Due to the quality of the published material, the Jornal de Pediatria's impact factor increased in the last year. These articles are important so that groundbreaking knowledge can be disseminated to all who read the Jornal de Pediatria. This results in a high degree of satisfaction among readers, who benefit from the most recent information, as well as among authors, who have their articles read internationally. However, professional development must also be carried out, by reading updated editorials and review articles on current and controversial topics. The Editorial Board of the Jornal de Pediatria has aimed to provide this type of communication. The editorials with specially invited authors and review articles on current and controversial topics have been carefully chosen and published in each issue of the journal. Editorials written by international authors of acknowledged competence and review articles are always very well accepted by our readers.

With this new supplement on Special Topics in Pediatrics, now available to all readers, we are increasing the offer of review articles. Our aim is to provide current articles on frequent and prevalent topics in pediatric practice. For space reasons, we were forced to choose the contributions considered to be the most relevant. The proposal made by the Editorial Board at the start of the current term includes an annual supplement with review articles. Therefore, this will be the first of a series of supplements aimed at keeping our readers updated.

This now offered supplement covers several topics, such as the pediatrician's role in the first 1000 days of a child's life, current management of acute diarrhea, insomnia, use of macrolides in pulmonary diseases, urinary tract infection, occult bacteremia in infants, epilepsy, therapeutic hypothermia in newborns, and chronic obstructive pulmonary diseases.

We hope this issue of the Jornal de Pediatria will be of very good use and that the next ones also be greatly appreciated.
