ABSTRACT: Jorge Lobo’s disease is a rare mycosis whose causative agent is Lacazia loboi (L. loboi), a fungus antigenically and phylogenetically similar to Paracoccidioides brasiliensis (P. brasiliensis). Due to its epidemiological characteristics and lack of studies on the immunological aspects of this disease, our objective was to perform HLA class I and II typing in 21 Jorge Lobo’s disease patients and compare their frequency with healthy individuals. Class I HLA typing was performed by the lymphotoxicity technique, and class II HLA determined by the PCR-SSP method. Two control populations were used, one from the Acre state and the Brazilian population data published at the 11th IHW in Japan. Our work suggests the first association between antigens and Jorge Lobo’s disease, specifically the DQ3-HLA, when patients were compared with the Brazilian population data. However, no association could be found when patients were compared with the Acre state population. We believe that a larger number of patients and the use of a method for identification of phenotype DQ-3 encoding allele would give us more detailed results.
