The 1st COPE South American Seminar - Brazil 2012

Rosemary S. Shinkai* * (on behalf of COPE)

Editor-in-chief

Following the publication of the Joint Statement of the II Brazilian Meeting on Research Integrity, Science and Publication Ethics (II BRISPE) in our last issue, it is a great pleasure to announce the first seminar of the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE) in Brazil. The 1st COPE South American Seminar will be held during the annual meeting of the Brazilian Association of Scientific Editors (ABEC) on November 12th, 2012, in Florianópolis, SC, Brazil.

The theme will be the one that has proved so successful for COPE this year in Europe and North America: "Correcting the Literature", which will encompass why corrections are needed, the appropriate ways to deal with them in terms of expressions of concern, corrections and retractions, and the problems that can arise. The seminar is being organized by COPE Council members Irene Hames and Rosemary Shinkai, together with former Vice Chair Sabine Kleinert (Senior Executive Editor of The Lancet).

The seminar will include talks:

• Irene Hames will open with an introduction to COPE and a general talk on retractions and correction of the literature.

• Sabine Kleinert will talk on The Lancet journals' experience with retractions, providing insight from the perspective of large journals.

• Ana Marusic, Co-Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Global Health, will provide an alternative perspective, highlighting the difficulties faced by small journals, particularly in developing countries where there may be political issues.

• A panel of Brazilian editors will relate their experiences of correcting the published research record. The guest panelists are Bruno Caramelli, Editor-in-Chief of Revista da Associação Médica Brasileira, Francisco Murilo Zerbini Jr, Editor-in-Chief of Tropical Plant Pathology, Charles Pessanha, Editor-in-Chief of Dados, Alexander Kellner, Editor-in-chief of Anais da Academia Brasileira de Ciências (Annals of the Brazilian Academy of Sciences), and Abel Packer, Director of SciELO.

In addition, there will be:

• Session on the COPE retraction guidelines.

• Breakout workshop session with discussion of case studies.

• Q & A panel made up of European and Brazilian editors and SciELO.

• Opportunities to network and share your experiences and challenges.

The seminar is OPEN to and FREE for all editors, publishers, authors and all those interested in publication ethics. Simultaneous translation English-Portuguese will be available. Details on complete programme, travel agency, and hotels are available at the ABEC website (http://www.abecbrasil.org.br/).
