SUMMARY
In 1560, the jesuit José de Anchieta, in a letter addressed to his superior in Portugal, described a flexible stone which he took to be a miracle among the many he reported after staying for years among the indians in S. Paulo. This stone he said, was flexible in more than one plane, thus differing from Arenarius flexilis L. which is flexible but in a single plane. Anchieta gave detailed characteristics of the marvellous stone. Trying to apply all these features to the sclerotia of Polyporus sapurema Moeller, it was found that the sclerotia of P. sapurema responded exactly to the peculiarities appointed by Anchieta. It is believed therefore, that Anchieta described for the first time in Brazil, the vegetative portions of a widespread and common saprophytic fungus.
