In an attempt to screen out new potent antibiotic producers from soil, Streptomyces hygroscopicus D_1.5 was isolated and was found antagonistic to both bacteria and fungi. It could utilise arginine as nitrogen source and glycerol as carbon source at 0.75 g/l and 11.5 g/l level, respectively for maximum antibiotic yield.
