Objective: To determine the relationship between the variability of office systolic (SBP) and diastolic (DBP) blood pressure with clinical variables of DM1. Methods: SBP and DBP were measured before and after 5 and 10 min of supine rest on three different days. The mean (CVM) and intrain-dividual (CVI) coefficients of variation for SBP and DBP were determined for the three different days and times of measurement. Results: The CVM of SBP for the three periods of measurement varied from 3.0 to 3.6% in adults and 3.3 to 4.6% in adolescents and for DBP from 5.5 to 6.6% in adults and 6.3 to 7.4% in adolescents. The CVM of SBP for the three days ranged from 6.4 to 6.8% in adults and 8.7 to 9.2% in adolescents with a higher CVI of SBP before and after 5 min of rest in adolescent than adult patients, respectively (8.1 ±3.1% vs 5.3±4.1%; p=0.004) and (7.9±4.7% vs 5.2±3.7%; p=0.02), which correlated with age: SBP before and after 5 min of rest (r= -0.34; r2= 0.12; p=0.007) and r= -0.31; r2=0.09; p=0.01), respectively. CVM for DBP varied from 9.7 to 10.1% in adults and 13 to 14.2% in adolescents. A decrease of SBP and DBP in the different periods of measurement was noted in adults with a correlation between duration of diabetes and SBP after 5 (r= 0.39; r2=0.15; p=0.007) and DBP after 10 min of rest (r= 0.36; r2= 0.13; p=0.01). Conclusion: The variability of SBP and DBP observed in this study during different days and times of determination supports the need for several measurements after a resting period (up to 10 min) in an adequate place, so that the routine evaluation of the diabetic patient can be accomplished properly.
