There is trade-off between quantity and quality in the process of doing research in Economics. To evaluate this trade-off, I document the publications of 94 researchers sponsored by the Brazilian governmental agency that provides funding for research (CNPq) and of 1209 researchers of 54 Economics departments in the U.S. The data show that, from 1999 to 2004, the average international publication of the CNPq researchers is very low. And yet, the average publication of these researchers is larger than the average publication of their U.S. peers, when the articles published in Brazil are taken into account. The results suggest that the CNPq researchers sacrifice quality to increase the number of publications.
