PARENTE, Adriana da Cunha Menezes and PEREIRA, Maria Alice Ornellas. How psychiatric patients perceive their families: a two-sided mirror. Rev. bras. enferm. [online]. 2004, vol.57, n.1, pp. 44-47. ISSN 0034-7167. http://dx.doi.org/10.1590/S0034-71672004000100009.
This study identifies how psychiatric patients perceive their families. We performed qualitative research, using open interview and life story narrative techniques. The data was analyzed using Thematic Analysis methodology, from which we identified two basic categories: Affection and Disaffection. Feelings related to disaffection were more frequent, allowing us to infer that the subjects suffer from difficulties in family relationships. On the other hand, the meaning of the family and the expectations held are variable and specific to each person. The study suggests the need for forms of assistance that take into account the subjective domain, by considering the perception and expectations of the patient regarding his/her family, and then planning an adequate therapeutic strategy.
