Abstract

ALVES, Pollianna Muniz; QUEIROZ, Lélia Maria Guedes; PEREIRA, Jozinete Vieira  and  PEREIRA, Maria do Socorro Vieira. In vitro antimicrobial, antiadherent and antifungal activity of Brazilian medicinal plants on oral biofilm microorganisms and strains of the genus Candida. Rev. Soc. Bras. Med. Trop. [online]. 2009, vol.42, n.2, pp. 222-224. ISSN 0037-8682.  http://dx.doi.org/10.1590/S0037-86822009000200028.

The antimicrobial, antifungal and antiadherent activity of aroeira-do-sertão, mallow and guava tree on oral biofilm microorganisms and oral candidiasis was evaluated in vitro. The extracts were shown to be effective in inhibiting the growth of bacteria of the oral biofilm and fungi of oral candidiasis, thus suggesting that these extracts can be used as alternative means of dental therapy.

Keywords : Oral biofilm; Medicinal Plants; Streptococcus; Lactobacillus; Candida.
