NEVES, Kilma Cristiane Silva; PORTO, Ana Lúcia Figueiredo  and  TEIXEIRA, Maria Francisca Simas. Screening of yeasts from Amazon Region for extracellular protease production. Acta Amaz. [online]. 2006, vol.36, n.3, pp.299-306. ISSN 0044-5967.

The objective of this work was to identify 50 yeasts isolates obtained from differents substracts from Amazon Region and to select one species of higher proteolytic activity. Among the 26 identified species it had predominance of Candida aquatica (12%) and Candida tropicalis (10%). The submerged fermentation was carried out in Malt Extract supplemented with gelatin 1%, Candida intermedia exhibited higher proteolytic activity, halo = 25 mm and 273U/mL, the maximum growth 30 ºC, the cellular viability 6.2 x 106 UFC, in 48 hours, did not demonstrate pathogenicity characteristics and the best inoculum density tested was 3%, using 24 hours Malt agar cultures.

Keywords : Yeasts; Amazon Region; Protease.
