Abstract

MOTT, Maria Lúcia. Training for midwives: should there be midwives or not?. Cad. Pesqui. [online]. 1999, n.108, pp. 133-160. ISSN 0100-1574.  http://dx.doi.org/10.1590/S0100-15741999000300006.

This articles analyzes the training courses for midwives in Brazil in the 19th century. The documentation studied is extremely rich and raises important issues referring to midwives' training; the characteristics of the desired student, the frequency and number of classes; the role of doctors and midwives in attending births; and the still present professional dispute over gender and race relations.
