The traditional historiography has been focusing the positivist influences in Brazilian's history of education in a very reducing way. Analysing the school mathematics textbooks as cultural objects this article will explain how the positivist thinking really contributed to mathematics' teaching in the period comprehending the end of Monarchy and the early Republic.
