KOBORI, Nilce Naomi; CICERO, Sílvio Moure y MEDINA, Priscila Fratin. X-Ray test to evaluate castor bean seed quality. Rev. bras. sementes [online]. 2012, vol.34, n.1, pp. 125-133. ISSN 0101-3122. http://dx.doi.org/10.1590/S0101-31222012000100016.
The increasing interest in using biodiesel as an alternative energy source is increasing the importance of some oleaginous crops, such as castor bean, although high quality seeds must be used. The objective of this study was to evaluate the efficiency of the X-ray test in determining castor bean seed quality after harvesting and storage. The internal seed morphology of three seed lots of the 'IAC 2028' cultivar (from the first, second and third raceme, respectively) and two seed lots of the 'Guarani' cultivar (commercial seed lots with the three racemes mixed) was evaluated with the X-ray test, at a radiation intensity of 20 kV and an exposure time of 60 seconds. Radiographed seeds were submitted to a germination test to determine any relationship between internal morphology and the quantity of normal and abnormal seedlings, and dead seeds. After six months of storage in paper bags, with no control of temperature or air relative humidity, seed samples were once more evaluated by the X-ray test. The X-ray test is effective in evaluating the internal morphology of castor bean seeds and its effects on seed physiological potential.
