Abstract

RIBEIRO, Kátia Suely Queiroz Silva. Popular extension experience and the academic training in physiotherapy. Cad. CEDES [online]. 2009, vol.29, n.79, pp. 335-346. ISSN 0101-3262.  http://dx.doi.org/10.1590/S0101-32622009000300004.

University extension activities are increasing within the academic sphere. However, different conceptions and ideologies guide these practices. Physiotherapy undergraduate courses do not usually involve extension activities in a constant way, since the aspect of assistance prevails among them. This paper presents an extension physiotherapy project experience based on popular education, performed in a community in João Pessoa. The importance of this experience in physiotherapists training is highlighted, since it improved contacts with the social reality, the local first-level health services and the links to people and community organizations, based on dialogue and social responsibility.
