This paper is aimed at reflecting upon the Brazilian Curriculum Directives for Childhood Education in the context of the childhood education policies under Fernando Henrique Cardoso's administration. It begins with an analysis of the educational reforms implemented in the field of childhood education, based on the legislation, reports, resolutions and documents issued by the Department of Education (MEC) since the LDB (Brazilian Education Basic Tenets Law) 9.394/96 measure, with an emphasis on the factors related to financing childhood education and teacher training. The text then analyzes the debate about the Brazilian Curriculum Directives for Childhood Education in the context of the on-going reforms. It eventually pinpoints some of the trends and utopias that have inspired educators in this field.
