This paper aims at analyzing the state policies for elementary education. Based on the debate on the repercussions of the curriculum reforms on the pedagogic practice within schools, the first part comments the "Parâmetros Curriculares Nacionais" (Brazilian Curriculum Parameters). The second one discusses the meaning of educational statistics and their consequences and results on education. The focus is the Brazilian System of Assessment (SAEB) and its limits to assess education. The conclusion is a letter to the Minister of Education, emphasizing the inconsistencies between the state policies and the educational reality.
