PRADO, Maria Ligia Coelho. Radical hope and conservative despair in the independence of Spanish America. História [online]. 2003, vol.22, n.2, pp.15-34. ISSN 0101-9074.

This article analyses two pamphlets of José Bernardo Monteagudo, important leader of the independence of Spanish South America, written before and after the event. In 1809, he was an ardent democrat, but in 1823, he had become a convincent monarchist, supporting the idea that the indians could not participate in any political activity.

Keywords : independence of Spanish America; José Bernardo Monteagudo; political dialogues.
