This article aims to examine the debate over immigration to Sergipe from the late 19^th century into the 20th century. The research was based on newspapers and a collection of laws. In conclusion it was observed that, although without the evidence of a single concrete fact, immigration had been the reason for laws and the subject of discourses that associated it somehow with the economic modernization of Sergipe.
