Abstract

FONTES, Paulo. Workers and urban associations during the Jânio Quadros administration in São Paulo (1953-1954). Rev. Bras. Hist. [online]. 2013, vol.33, n.66, pp.71-94. ISSN 1806-9347.  http://dx.doi.org/10.1590/S0102-01882013000200005.

This article analyses the popular organizations activities, particularly the ones related to the working-class neighborhoods, during the short period of Jânio Quadros administration in the São Paulo city. Janio had been elected with strong support from these organizations. Based on the analyses of around 250 processes, gathering petitions, letters and other documents from the Neighborhoods associations to the Major cabinet in 1953 and 1954, the article aims to explore the populist political system, highlighting the role of urban dimension in the workers and political leaders' strategies.

Keywords : working-class; urban associations; Jânio Quadros.
