In the literature about Mattoso Câmara's work, there is practically no reference to his studies in syntax. The purpose of this article is to show that the author has also worked in Portuguese syntax in all its extension. His considerations concerning simple and complex clauses are deeply stimulating and, considering his predominantly formalist approach, they cannot be interpreted as a simple retaking of the traditional view.
