It has been observed in Brazil during the last decade a series of important studies analyzing the constitution of museums in the nineteenth century, its relationship with academic institutions, and its role in the making of the nation. The article aims at broadening this field of investigation by analyzing practices, structures, cultural policies, and current processes among Brazilian museums, considering the transformations the Brazilian society has been through and its relationship with transnational contexts.
