This article introduces landscaping as a social and environmental practice. This practice expresses cultural values and ecological conditionings. This combination reveals forms of relationship between society and nature and reflects prevalent world views. Interpretations of reality exist along human history. Concepts of order, rationality and control pervade the western world, while present in the urban process and in landscaping. The discussion establishes a background to explore the role of worldviews both in the search for the ideal city and in landscaping. It argues that different landscaping models privilege different dimensions of reality. Recently, landscaping evolved by the adoption of ecological principles and a wide environmental understanding. Although a concept in building, environmental landscaping reveals contradictions of contemporary society.

Palavras-chave : ideology; world views; landscaping; environmental landscaping.
