The purpose of the present study was to review the literature on the relationship between learning strategies and students academic achievement Cognitive psychology based on information processing theory was used as the theoretical framework. This study aims to contribute to a discussion about the possibility of enhancing learning skills of Brazilian students at risk of school failure or of dropping out, and about the need of improving elementary school teachers education.
