The purpose of this paper was to evaluate six Brazilian psychology journals (Psicologia: Teoria e Pesquisa; Psicologia: Reflexão e Crítica; Psico; Arquivos Brasileiros de Psicologia; Psicologia USP e Boletim de Psicologia), edited between 1990 and 1997. We examined 749 papers in 80 issues of these journals. Three main questions were examined: the journals editorial practices, the authors profile, and the type of institutions with which they were affiliated. The results showed that: there are few researchers publishing systematically in Brazil; that the authors were concentrated in few institutions in the Southeast-South regions; and that researchers in public universities are more productive than those in private ones. The data also showed a relationship between the number of published papers and the existence of graduate programs in these universities and between the researchers institutional affiliation and the journal in which they published.
