The objective of the present study was to assess the self-concept of 40 children of both sexes aged 7 to 10 years, enrolled in 1st and 2nd grade in a public school in the municipality of Uberaba, MG, of at least medium low intellectual level, divided into two groups: G1, consisting of 20 children with learning difficulties who were enrolled in a complementary program denoted Alternative Teaching in addition to the regular school program, and G2, consisting of 20 children with no learning difficulties, enrolled in a regular school program with good performance. The instruments used were: Progressive Color Matrices - Childhood Raven - Special Scale and the Piers-Harris Children's Self-Concept Scale-Revised Manual. G1 children were found to have significantly lower overall self-concept and intellectual status scores, as well as significantly lower popularity than G2 children.
