This paper aims to discuss the role of commuting at intrametropolitan level and its relation to urban agglomeration restructuring processes. A theoretical and empirical review is presented to build a preliminary framework, used in the analysis of the Demographic Census 2000 data, to identify the spatial patterns of major urban areas of Brazil.
