Polishing amalgam restorations results in a smoother surface, reducing the presence of porosities, favouring a good response of periodontal tissues and thus increasing the longevity of those restorations. Therefore, several techniques have been described in order to contribute to higher quality restorations. Recently, sandblasting devices have been introduced in dental practice and the authors describe an alternative technique for finishing and polishing amalgam restorations using sandblasting, which results in clinically adequate superficial characteristics.
