CAVALCANTE, Sávio Machado. Value, income and "immateriality" in contemporary capitalism. Cad. CRH [online]. 2014, vol.27, n.70, pp.115-130. ISSN 0103-4979.  http://dx.doi.org/10.1590/S0103-49792014000100009.

Contemporary capitalism is characterized by increasing combination of traditional production of "physical" commodities to the creation of commodities and intangible services that are exchanged for having information, knowledge or artistic appeal/cultural feature. This situation was made possible by new technologies that change work processes and raise doubts on the theory of value developed by Marx. The purpose of this article is to discuss these issues based on arguments raised by Brazilian authors who converge on the following conclusions: science and technology are mobilized for the production of "worthless" commodities; consequently, the capitalist appropriation assumes a character increasingly rentier; it is possible to analyze this process based on Marx's theory of value which explains that there is an autonomization of capital in relation to its material contents. Thus, it is argued that, instead of its obsolescence, a qualitative transformation of value takes place and it continues to process as social norm, albeit in a form "without measure".
