Intergenerational influence on the care of newborns' umbilical stumps

This study was aimed at understanding the intergenerational relationships which affect the care of newborns' umbilical stumps. It is a descriptive research with a qualitative approach, based on the Cultural Care Diversity and Universality Theory and undertaken in the city of Jequie, Bahia, with the participation of 29 people, 10 being puerperal women and 19 care giver family members. The data was collected through semi structured interviews and the participant observation was subsidized by the field diary. A thematic content analysis was used for the data analysis. The results showed the influence of cultural values on intergenerational family systems, particularly on the care process, resulting in risks of illnesses due to popular care practices related to the umbilical stump. Based on this, the educational projects need to consider the cultural context of the involved people, therefore promoting consistency between popular and scientific knowledge.
