ABSTRACT

Objective:

to analyze and compare the representational structure of health care and illness among people undergoing dialysis.

Method:

qualitative research guided by the Theory of Social Representations in its structural approach, with 165 participants, including adults, of both sexes undergoing hemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis in four nephrology services in Curitiba and its surrounding region. The data were collected between June 2014 and May 2015, through free evocations of the terms "disease care" and "health care" and treated through the Ensemble of Pemettant Programs L'Analyse des Evoctions software and four quadrants analysis.

Results:

the results show that the representations of health care and disease share disease content, but it has a distinct organization, health with the focus of life habits and biomedical dimension, and the disease emphasizes the evaluative aspect.

Conclusions:

the representations of health care and disease interact with behaviors, attitudes and positions of care and provide elements to understand and support individual resources and adjustment of the disease.
