QUALITY OF LIFE OF HOSPITALIZED OCTOGENARIANS

CALIDAD DE VIDA DE OCTOGENARIOS HOSPITALIZADOS

ABSTRACT

Objective:

to characterize socio-demographic and economic profiles, as well as to evaluate the quality of life of hospitalized octogenarians.

Method:

cross-sectional study with 128 hospitalized octogenarians. Instruments from the World Health Organization were used to evaluate the quality of life. Spearman correlation coefficient, student’s t-test and analysis of variance were used to correlate the studied variables with the quality of life of octogenarians.

Results:

the longer the hospitalization time, the higher the psychological score (p=0.0126), and the higher the scores in the past, present and future activity domain (p = 0.0485). The higher the age, the lower the score in the past, present, and future activity domain (p=0.0480). The higher the number of octogenarian morbidities, the lower the score in the social relation domain.

Conclusion:

it is highly important that care for the hospitalized elderly is planned and implemented, taking into account the factors that interfere in a positive and negative way in their quality of life.
