Abstract

FREIRE, Luiz Alberto Ribeiro. Vitoriano dos Anjos Figueiroa, the high altar of the main church of Campinas and the tradition of Altarpieces production in Bahia. Varia hist. [online]. 2008, vol.24, n.40, pp. 445-464. ISSN 0104-8775.  http://dx.doi.org/10.1590/S0104-87752008000200007.

This paper talks about the life and work of an important carver, Vitoriano dos Anjos Figueiroa, who worked in Bahia (Salvador and Recôncavo) during the first half of the XIX century, and migrated in the 1850s to the city of Campinas, in São Paulo, where he made a magnificent main altarpiece in the Cathedral, a canopy with twelve columns of technical and aesthetic excellence. We start addressing the news and the artistic production of Vitoriano dos Anjos in Bahia, presenting important revelations about documents and works that enrich the current knowledge. Then, we follow the carver trajectory in Campinas, comparing documental data with chronicles published in the journals of São Paulo. We conclude analyzing the artist's achievements, from a formal and stylistic point of view, identifying the echoes of a relevant tradition in the production of altarpieces, developed in Bahia during the eighteenth century.
