Abstract

BASILE, Marcello. The good example of Washinton: republicanism in Rio de Janeiro (c.1830-1835). Varia hist. [online]. 2011, vol.27, n.45, pp. 17-45. ISSN 0104-8775.  http://dx.doi.org/10.1590/S0104-87752011000100002.

This paper analyses the development of republicanism in the capital of Brazilian Empire, in the end of the First Reign and the beginning of the regency period. It argues that this movement was an important part of the political project produced by a radical group called liberais exaltados. They employed several tricks to by-pass the laws that forbade to vindicate the republican government, denoting thus different manners to support the republic. However, more than an apology for a specific form of government, the republic language of this time articulated in a system of ideas a broad array of radical political, social and economic changes that aimed to depurate the "absolutist" remainders of State and the "aristocratic" characters of the Brazilian society. These so-called republican reforms could both to prepare and to follow the advent of the new regime. Press, Parliament and riots were the main channels of republicanism demonstrations in Rio de Janeiro's Court.

Keywords : republicanism; radical liberal; Regency.
