Abstract

MAIA, João Marcelo Ehlert. Frontiers and Peripheral State-building: The Case of Fundação Brasil Central. Varia hist. [online]. 2019, vol.35, n.69, pp.895-919.  Epub Sep 23, 2019. ISSN 0104-8775.  http://dx.doi.org/10.1590/0104-87752019000300008.

This article analyzes the territorial practices of Fundação Brasil Central (1943-1967) in order to discuss state-building in peripheral contexts. By looking at FBC’s reports, letters, and official magazines, I argue that the absence of a clear definition of the boundaries of Central Brazil was central for the process of territorial accumulation FBC was pushing forward. The article focuses on a few selected empirical cases of land conflicts to demonstrate the violent outcomes of this process for the local population and workers.

Keywords : Fundação Brasil Central; Estate and territory; State-building.
