This article is about theses and dissertations on Healthcare Residency produced in Brazil between 1987 and 2011. Research on residency has increased over recent years, and the importance of in-service education as a powerful method for developing healthcare workers has been demonstrated. This article presents 94 studies that were located in the thesis database of the Capes portal, found through the descriptors "residency + health", "preceptor" and "internship". It also discusses the descriptors that are formally recommended and compares them with the ones used by researchers on this subject. Through the way that this article is presented, the aim is to provide an overview of the subject so that new articles may be produced, thus further enriching the scientific production in this field and, consequently, the in-service training carried out through healthcare residency.
