Combining education and work involves some of the assumptions of the training process in the field of healthcare. The aim of this paper was to analyze the training provision by mental healthcare institutions in the state of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. We chose to take a qualitative investigative approach based on selection of a sample of institutions that are committed to educational processes in this field. The data collection involved contact with specific informants and analysis on documents, focusing on the following variables: target audience, duration, frequency, nature, type of training action and pedagogical policy projects. Several mental health training proposals at different types of institutions were found. The investigation resulted in a map of institutions and training actions: an analytical matrix of training and qualification within the field of mental health in the region.
