This article aims to describe the pre-trial stage for the use diagnosis of the primary health care assessment tool – PCATool – Brazil adult version applied to a group of thirty elderly from sixty years old, registered at a primary healthcare unit. The instrument was fully implemented and the appropriateness of language and the applicability of the PCATool constructs to their realities were assessed. There was some difficulty in understanding some questions, and some elderly people have expressed fatigue due to the extent of the data collection instrument. We conclude that the instrument in its original form, does not take into account the elderly population heterogeneity and its social, cultural, educational, economic and political diversity.
