The topic of this article is the German colonization in the Brazilian state of Rio Grande do Sul in the 19th century from the perspective of environmental history and with special attention to what the settlers felt when they first got into touch with subtropical forest. The reader finds a discussion about the deforestation on behalf of civilization and the environmental impact of this process.
