Voluntary certification systems are now playing an important role on the sustainability debate. In the absence of governmental authority, those systems build and maintain legitimacy through political support from stakeholders that are engaged in a certain market. This article presents consideration about the means of building and maintaining legitimacy in the FSC forest certification system.
