Historical-social study based in documentary analysis. It deals with the circumstances of the process of reconfiguration of the Professional School of Nurses of the Service of Assistance to Psychopaths of the Federal District, in the first half of Century XX, future Alfredo Pinto School of Nursing, from the Federal University of the State of Rio de Janeiro. OBJECTIVES: To describe the movements that the public health and psychiatry had developed, in the scope of the newly-organized Ministry of the Education and Public Health, to adjust itself to the politics of the beginning of the Vargas period; and to analyze the characteristics of the Professional School of Nurses and of the Anna Nery School that corresponded the distinct visions. The fields of the public health, psychiatry and the nursing had structuralized themselves from the principles of vision and division, which had guided the fights, the controversies and the competitions between the diverse involved agents and had imposed the limits and the historical possibilities in these two schools of nursing, in the Federal District.
