Current paper deals with a descriptive study based on a qualitative approach with regard to an artisan group of a Health Basic Unit in the municipality of Maringá PR Brazil, between March and August 2009. The objective was to understand the reasons for inserting women in the artisan group. Data collection techniques comprised a participatory observation and an open interview carried out at the home of eleven female subjects. Data were investigated according to content analysis technique through which three categories emerged: Providing promotion of a mental health; integrating a space which encourages speaking, listening and sharing; seeking a space for teaching and learning. Group participation contributed towards an improvement in the life quality of female subjects who found themselves in emotional pain conditions and offered favorable conditions from the point of view of psychic and social development.
