Abstract

PURPOSE: to check the use of a maneuver of reposition of the earphones in case of collapse suspicion can alter the hearing thresholds for high frequencies, improving the same ones. METHODS: 89 individuals participated in the study, with age between 18 and 35 years, wich presented larger difference or same to 10 dBNA in the thresholds of the frequencies of 6000 and 8000 Hz in relation to frequency of 4000Hz. Retest of the hearing thresholds was accomplished in the frequencies of 4000, 6000 and 8000 Hz, starting from the reposition of the earphones and use of specific maneuver, that consisted of guiding the patient, asking him to held the earphone very close to the ear, without excessive pressure, avoiding, in this way, the collapse of the external acoustic meatus. RESULTS: in agreement with the data obtained through this study, significant improvement of the hearing thresholds can be verified with the use of the maneuver described in this study in 60.7% of the appraised individuals. CONCLUSION: from the results, it was possible to verify that the collapse of the external acoustic meatus caused by the pressure of the earphones can interfere in the results of the pure tone audiometry, as well as it was possible to observe the effectiveness of the maneuver described in this study to minimize the interference of this fenomenal.
