Abstract
KOPILER, Daniel Arkader. Physical activity for the elderly. Rev Bras Med Esporte [online]. 1997, vol.3, n.4, pp. 108-112. ISSN 1517-8692. http://dx.doi.org/10.1590/S1517-86921997000400004.
The elderly population is growing in the world in such an important proportion, that what seemed to be a trend only in developed countries is also occurring in the less developed nations. In this scenario, physical activity comes as an interesting manner to provide the elderly with an opportunity to maintain their health and to assure independence. In order to accomplish this goal, an exercise program must be carried out with safety, usually preceded by an exercise tests and a customized protocol, and with activity programs including long and gradual periods of warming-up and cooling-down. Benefits on physical fitness and psychological conditions are evident, providing a better social integration of these individuals.
