In this paper, from the theoretical perspective of Discourse Analysis in conjunction with the History of Linguistic Ideas, we will examine the practice of documentation and divulgation of the linguistic knowledge accomplished by Revista do Instituto Histórico e Geográfico Brasileiro. To this end, we firstly analyze the Revistas do IHGB from the 19th century (1839-1889), showing how the linguistic knowledge is constituted in the discourse of IHGB and subsequently the Revista do IHGB n. 400 (1998), index which organizes and divulges all RIHGB production from 1839 until 1998. As theoretical notions we mobilized concepts such as archive, linguistic documentation, and scientific divulgation. Our aim is to show how the documentation and divulgation stabilize some meanings and obliterate some others in the Brazilian linguistic knowledge.
